The Badoo logo

One of the most famous applications on the market to meet people and have relationships must always be at the forefront. Badoo's image, since his birth, has seen some changes. This service was born in 2006 in Russia but it was not the first. The first dating website emerged in 1995 and is called Match.com. Ayes at least they catalog it from Dating Sites Reviews. Later, a whole market of applications came to light with the incursion of smartphones and applications. This time we will talk about the Badoo logo and its origin.

The competition for Badoo has always been enormous, but it has maintained great prestige within them. Others like Tinder or Grindr (for the LGTBi+ community) confront who has the most users. That is why the change of image, updates and new services are essential to stay on the wave of dating applications.

When was Badoo born?

As we mentioned at the beginning of this article, Badoo was born in 2006 as another dating website.. This was just before the birth of smartphones and the transformation to the use of mobile applications. Although the author of this app is Russian, the launch took place in London. This application started with a single owner, but soon other companies saw the potential it could have. Thus, the company Finam capital acquired 10% of the company for 30 million euros.

This figure triggered a growth of the application in Russia first and then in the rest of the countries. Since, years later, in 2009, the same company took over 10% more of it. These technology companies have much higher growth than traditional companies. And it is that in 2012, only six years later, Badoo has 150 million users on your network around the world.

Most of these users come from countries like Spain, France, Italy and Latin America. Its influence had its negative side, since the viralization of the Russian application brought with it the threat from Facebook to remove it from its platform.

Badoo's first logo

First Badoo logo

As with most logos around 2006, Badoo is born with a very colorful logo.. In fact, it reminds us of the technological giant Google by inserting a different color to each of its letters. It also does it with the size of the letters. Each one of a different size. Its particular difference is that it creates a more casual image, willing to attract a young audience. Flat colors, without pastel shades (curiously how it is worn in this year 2022).

The first Badoo logo lasted from its inception until the year 2017 where they decided to make a change due to the growth of the brand itself. This change is more than justified, since the logo itself was far from evoking what it is dedicated to. In addition, with the appearance of more private social networks such as Facebook and Instagram and tree from the 'like' icon it was to be expected that there would be a modification.

Unsuccessfully, this first logo wanted to be inclusive of the different colorsbut it doesn't quite fit. They also included as an eye, a point inside the 'O' pretending to be the head and eye of a person, but few really imagine that this is representative.

Change to the new Badoo logo

In 2017 the first change came. Badoo was losing its identity and needed to make some changes. They made changes to the font, wanting to make it 'handwritten' (typography that simulates being written by hand) and choosing a rounded heart that looks inflated with air. This isotype reflects the same as the rounded letters. An icon and a friendly typography, which denotes warmth and closeness. It reflects a certain confidence.

The first problem with this change is that the image was white and the heart was red. Something very common throughout the market, the only thing that reflected part of their identity was that they used a purple background. But only if you accompanied with that background could it make sense, but not in all versions you will be able to do it in the same way. In fact, the other version was black letters and a red heart on a white background.. Something that did not link anything with the brand and that took it out on any particular trait.

The Badoo logo consists of two parts: the graphic symbol and the word mark. The previous symbol was non-distinctive and lacked an emotional touch, so our goal was to create a new one that would evoke positive emotions, warm feelings, and happy memories around real dates. Our new symbol is close, friendly, human and welcoming.

11 years had passed to make this change, but since the result was not as expected, a new change was needed just 2 years later. The new branding came from the same graphic team led by Sasha Ivanov. And on this occasion, the logo gained greater identity with just two movements. The first was to include a distinction in an icon as characteristic as trite, the heart. Adding a smile, generating more playability for the loading phases within the app, for example. They also changed the shade of purple to a more pastel color and included it in the font. In this way, we can see a greater identity.

Badoo's unintended feature

And although we have talked about Badoo as a simple application to meet people or datingIt has a very special function. And it is that, with this type of dating applications, the civil guard and state security forces can find out what intentions the users have. Thus, with a minimum of tracking under the safety of users, many criminals and sexual predators are investigated and hunted down.. What makes this function easier by being able to hide your identity as if it were any other person.

The negative part of this functionality is the security of the application. According to a privacy protection study, Badoo failed, being relegated to one of the last positions in this same ranking.
