Young-Deok Seo is a South Korean artist who has taken in his hand hundreds of pieces of bicycle chains to form works of art. An artistic expression that Seo achieves with an inanimate object that is usually located like the automotive system of a vehicle.
Hundreds of bicycle chains that form realistic sculptures of the human body. With a wealth of detail, that cool inanimate object is capable of forming an intricate mesh to show the human face or a woman's torso when looking up.
But there is a message that underlies Young-Deok Seo's artwork. This is the way we are ourselves the "animated" parts of a giant machine. As if we were components, we are totally hooked to each other so that the giant machine never stops.
And like the parts of that machine, we are not allowed to be the protagonist of our own life. A message from an artist who believes that industrialization is a way to reduce the strength of our spirits and suppress our feelings.
For that it takes all that huge number of bicycle chains to recreate human forms that try to carry that message that is well attached to each of Seo's sculptures.
