Say that the Isotype of the sports brand Nike, is one of the most famous symbols in the world, it is really falling short. That logo has been in the visual landscape of most of the inhabitants of the planet; Everyone has once had that symbol on our retina, the logo of one of the largest companies in the world and that is reproduced in 1000 different ways, on different media and on different devices.

The creator of this design is none other than Carolyn davidson, which was commissioned by Phil Night, one of the owners of the company  Blue Ribbon Sports, to make a logo for a new series of sports shoes ... this is where the story called .... Carolyn davidson and swoosh.

In the present, hundreds of thousands of professionals graphic design around the world develop their work because they would like to be like one of the great designs, those who have marked us by the weight of seeing them every day included in our iconography general basic daily. That is why, as in previous post, I brought you current designers in posts such as, Jing zhang show how things are inside It also seems important to me to show the great designers of our time.

El logo de Coca-Cola, he Cock de Kellogh's, bat from the chest of Batman, Smiley face de matutano, are some of the logos that I remember from my childhood, and each one of us has ours, even our parents and grandparents they had them. The consumer habits that we have, make these logos coincide according to which people or groups, the logos that surely coincide with those of the most famous brands. Well, surely that of Nike is among them.

In 1971,  Carolyn davidson I was a student of graphic design for the University of Portland where it coincided with Phil Knight, professor of accounting at the university and who together with Bill Bowerman, athletics teacher would later be known worldwide later for being the founders of one of the most famous sports brands of all time Nike.

Carolyn davidson tells Soho Magazine of Puerto Rico how he met Phil Knight:

One day I was sitting in the corridor of the art building, working with a colleague on an artistic exercise in perspective and convergence. While we were doing the homework we talked, and at one point she asked me if I was going to enroll in oil painting classes, to which I answered no, because the class was very expensive and I couldn't pay for it. Many people were passing by us, but I never realized that Phil Knight passed in front of us, just as I was explaining to my friend why I would not take those classes. Ten minutes later, a man in a dark blue suit came up to us and said, "I heard you can't afford oil painting classes" (who are you and how do you know that? I thought). Immediately, the man introduced himself and told me that he worked for Tiger Shoes, that some Japanese executives were coming to the country and that he needed help making some charts and graphs, and that he would pay me two dollars an hour. Considering that I was a student on a very limited budget, the answer was hardly obvious. I accepted and this is how my story began.

Nike Logos

Nike logo through the decades.

Then the good of Phil asked our Carolyn to make a design for a logo of a sports shoe. She offered him several designs to which he chose the one that is the Isotype of the logo de Nike, known as Swoosh, which some say is because of its pipe shape, and another say that it is because of the fabric of one of the first shoe designs that was called swoosh fibers. The name of Nike, it was given by Jeff Johnson, from the Research and Development department, who obtained it from the Greek Goddess of Victory  Nike, who flew and jumped over the battlefield.

Carolyn I charge only 35 dollars for what later has been one of the best worked logos in the history of advertising:

When the drawing that would identify the brand of PhilI wondered how I was going to charge him for my designs, so I thought I would only charge him for the drawing he chose, and thirty-five dollars was what I asked for. In any case, it is important to mention that I still had a lot to learn. Ten years later, when the company went public, Nike organized a reception for me where they gave me a gold ring in the shape of the swoosh and an inlaid diamond. Phil He handed me two certificates in a sealed envelope; one distinguished me as the owner of a certain number of shares of Nike and the other said that I was responsible, from that moment on, for the warranty claims and the defective shoes. Phil He is a great man, very loyal and with a great sense of humor. Nike had paid me thirty-five dollarsso everything was fine and Phil he had nothing else to do, and yet he did it. He had definitely paid me too well for my work.
