Create a poster with flower arrangement and typography

Flower arrangement 01

The use of flower arrangement has risen in popularity in recent years, thanks to designers like Lucy bowes o Aless baylis and the return to fame of autumn and pastel colors. Flowers, branches and leaves are commonly placed in some geometric shape to give volume and interest to the text they enclose, and that is just what we are going to do today.

For this tutorial, you can design your own flowers or search for digital resources on websites such as Freepik, ShutterstockThe noun project, depending on the type of flowers you want to use. In this case, I am going to work with these flowers obtained by rawpixel.com.

The first step is choose the type of shape that we are going to use to place the flowers. It is always preferable to use a smooth shape, with few edges so that the harmony of soft colors and nature with hard and very straight shapes. For this tutorial, we are going to work with a circumference as a structure to build the floral frame. I recommend giving a thickness of at least 3 points to the line so that it is easily visible while we are placing the flowers, since it will be removed later.

In a document of Illustration In A4 size we make a circumference of 12 cm in diameter to have a margin to place the flowers, and we place it in the center of the page. Afterwards, we begin to place the flower arrangement so that it is uniform but not perfect. Something important to keep in mind is that in this type of design, green color is considered neutral, with which the green shapes will have to be distributed over the entire arrangement.

The next step is to alternate the flowers and leaves so that they flow with the shape, and trying to create a attractive color scheme and uniform. The shapes of the leaves and stems help us to continue the shape of the circumference and break the pattern a bit so that it is not just flowers. I have added a butterfly to continue the color scheme and give some equilibrium without repeating the flowers that I have placed in the other half too much, but you can choose another object or organic form that you consider harmonizes with the rest of the arrangement.

When we have the complete flower arrangement, we eliminate the circle that we have used as a reference and choose a background color. I recommend using a secondary color that appears in the arrangement, or if not looking for a pastel tone that combines well. I will use the yellow in the center of a flower, since it is a very small detail and it will not be lost with the background. In addition, with the background of the appropriate color we can see if it is necessary to resize the flower arrangement, or if we want to add something more than contrast with the color of the background.

We are already at the final stretch. The only thing left for us now is choose a phrase and an attractive typeface to match the rest of the image. It can be an inspirational phrase, the title of a book, etc., whatever you think best fits the tone of your poster. For this tutorial we are going to use the name of the blog and the year of publication of this article; This way we will have different font sizes to play with to balance the content of the text with the flower arrangement. The color of the typeface must be part of the palette, but this time one (in this case, I have used three) that stands out more than the one chosen for the background, and when choosing typeface, we must take into account the roundness of the forms and try to fit it to make it organic.

The end result should be something similar to this image. Once finished we can rotate the flower arrangement or modify it if we are not convinced how it has been, change the color of the background or the typography to better adapt to the image we want to achieve.
