Design a well-functioning wine label

Learn how to design a wine label

Design a wine label that works correctly in a way that communicates based on real needs and not with an attractive but baseless design. Designing a wine label is a whole project at the design level that goes beyond simple graphic aesthetics but is necessary master theoretical knowledge and a lot of documentation to get to a proposal that works correctly.

In this post we will see an example of label design explaining fundamental points that can help us create this type of project and any other since the theoretical foundations can be extrapolated to any graphic projects.

Suppose we have been commissioned to design a wine label, the client wants a name for your wine and a tag. He tells us about the origin of your product and about what you are looking for, you have an idea in mind but you are not clear about it. Has left us free so we must surprise him.

Document us

The first thing we have to do is document us about the productTo do this we can interview the client so that he can tell us about the wine he offers and its characteristics. The ideal in this part is to be able visit the area where the grapes are grown for have inspiration and to know a little about the environment in which the brand operates.

Documentation is essential in a graphic project

Once we have information about the essence of the product, the next thing we have to do is think about what what do we want to represent with our label: is it a young wine? Classic wine? Is the area where it is grown important? Thinking of everything is basic for get the bases out of what our project will be.

Where we want to go

We must think about what we want represent with our label, know the essence of the product and what can be the right idea to promote it.

Where we want to go with our graphic project

Let's do it

Once we are clear about what we want to represent, the next thing we must do is start create idea maps to start linking the theoretical contents that we have. The ideal of this is to do brainstorming and many schemes to organize information.

The next thing to the schematics part is filter the information and keep the most important.

Practical case

Now we are going to see a practical case of how to create a wine label, we will see the creation of the naming and we will comment on how to present the idea to the client.

Rofe the wine of Lanzarote (Canary Islands)

In this case you had to create a label for a wine from Lanzarote a Canary Island. After a previous study, it was concluded that the most important thing was the origin of the product and the environment given its climate and quality of the land for cultivation.

We must know data about the product when creating a wine label

El name Rofe wine from the mineral present in the cultivation of wine on the island, it is a volcanic residue that provides unique characteristics to the land.

The naming process must take into account words close to the origin of the product

With the name base defined the following was to search as represent graphically the wine label. For this part it was necessary look for other features represented the island of Lanzarote, in the end they wanted to represent the artistic part of the island thanks to the contribution of artist Cesar Manrique.

To create the visual graphics for the label, we started from the idea of represent volcanoes for its importance on the island and the artistic part for the artist influence César Manrique.

Wine label design

At the top we can see the design of the wine labels. As is logical it was wanted to represent the three types of wine from the island: pink, red and white. Bold colors with a classic typeface to achieve that contrast between the old and the new. On the other hand, we can see how some dies have been created in the label format for simulate mountains and smooth terrain characteristic in the growing area. At the top of the label we see a simulation of a volcano eruption with abstract lines.

When presenting a project to a client it is necessary create something attractive that can help you see the result of the project in the most real way possible, for this we can use mock-ups that help us to achieve quite real representations and professionals of graphic projects.

A mockup helps us create good graphic representations

In the case of the wine bottle, the ideal would be print the label in good quality and stick it on real bottles for customer to see the design on its actual support.

As we have been able to see in a very concise and summarized way when we work on a graphic project we must bear in mind many theoretical data that help us to get the essence that ends up being a powerful and efficient graphic.

Pablo everything is very simple, I am a designer in Cuba, I do not know how they behave there, but here it is not customary to celebrate the work of others, when I see something good I say it, I really liked this example, especially in the form of explain the methodology.
