From music to design: How to translate sound into images?

art-v-science

One of the greatest challenges that humans face is understanding how the arts work and finding a way to measure, quantify and manipulate them. It is something like a passage between science and philosophy. To find a bridge where science, physics, metaphysics, emotions, humanity and art converge. Come on what would be paradise for any artist and almost anyone.

Although it seems that I speak of a utopia, it would not be strange that we were heading towards that point of understanding. In fact, it seems that the relationships between the different arts and the manifestations of their codes are beginning to meet, which becomes something incredible. Many scholars have succeeded establish relationships between colors and musical notes based on physical parameters such as the wavelengths of colors and the sound frequencies of musical notes. At the end of the day we are talking about movements, energies, quantities that manifest themselves in a frequency and power, elements that can be analyzed and quantified.

But this does not stop there, studies have also been developed that argue that a certain sound causes responses in people and therefore we know that certain colors also cause certain physical responses in their receptors. The most amazing thing about all this is that these studies are turning from being philosophy to becoming a science. Pure quantum physics. Physical studies on the effects on the body of being exposed to a certain musical note, to a certain color and the relationships between these codes. We are not talking about psychology, or subjective thoughts, but about physical reactions in the body (although this really has a lot to do with emotions and thoughts). We then find a rational, quantifiable, and measurable relationship that becomes a path to emotions, to art. Towards the great answer Why is art art? Is art something quantifiable, measurable and studyable? It is a union between art and science. The human being, matter and emotions.

On more than one occasion I have wondered if it might be possible to translate a great song into a great visual composition. For example, Lacrimosa from Mozart to a canvas or even a photograph. I suppose that all of us who are dedicated to the world of the image have fantasized about this type of thing at some time. How can we really manipulate art codes? Is it possible to understand the arts at such a depth that it reveals the very nature of the universe, the human being and everything that surrounds us? We are in a process of constant evolution and research. But this career began as early as ancient times with the discovery of amazing sequences that seem to be present in all orders of existence, including art. We talk about the Fibonacci sequence and the golden ratio found in the works of Da Vinci, Mozart, Beethoven or even in the arrangement of the Egyptian pyramids and the arrangement of the petals of a flower.

The following video has left me speechless and it reflects very well this dimension of the arts. In it we find a translation of music to the most natural phenomena, to images caused by the physical nature of sound, of matter. This video clip has become viral and it is nothing strange. Water, electricity, fire and earth follow the logic of music. Everything that appears in the video is the product of experiments, that is, there is no special effect beyond the montage of the shots. Without a doubt, a show that any artist from any branch should attend.

If you are interested in this topic, I would recommend that you look at some books that will undoubtedly leave you astonished and will reveal other facets of the world of image, music and communication that you did not know and of course will help you enrich yourself as a creator. For the moment I leave you as I said this fantastic video, I am sure that it will awaken new questions in you as a creative and will open new lines of understanding about artistic processes. Art has never been so close to science.
