Gimp - Free Design

GIMP (GNU Image Manipulation Program) is a program of Imagen editor of the project GNU. It is published under the license GNU General Public License.

It is the strongest alternative to FOSS to the popular photo retouching program Photoshop. The first version was developed for systems Unix and was designed especially for GNU / Linux, however currently (version 2.2) there are fully functional versions for Windows and to Mac OS X.

There is a version portable GIMP that can be transported and used directly from a pen drive without having to be installed on the computer [1].

The graphical controls library GTK, developed for GIMP, gave rise to the Windows Windows environment GNOME.

Features:

GIMP was developed as a free alternative to Photoshop, but the latter still dominates the market in the printing and graphics industries.

In addition to interactive use, GIMP allows the automation of many processes through macros. It includes a language called Scheme which can be used for this, plus other alternatives like Perl, Python, Tcl and (experimentally) Ruby. This allows you to write scripts and plugins for GIMP that can then be used interactively; It is also possible to produce images in a totally non-interactive way (for example, generate images on the fly for a web page using hyphens CGI) and perform batch processing that changes color or converts images. For simpler automatable tasks, it is probably faster to use a package like Imagemagick, but GIMP has much more powerful features.

GIMP uses GTK+ as a library of graphical controls; actually GTK + was originally part of GIMP, in an attempt to replace the commercial library Motif, on which GIMP originally depended. GIMP and GTK + were originally designed for the system X window executed on OS type Unix, but have been ported to Windows, OS / 2, Mac OS X y Sky OS.

Current versions of GIMP (in September de 2007) are: stable 2.2.17 (for end users) and development 2.4RC3 (for users of testing, review and improvement of the program). The most important changes from version 1.2 include a more polished interface and a greater separation between the user interface and the Back-end. For the future, it is planned to base GIMP on a more general graphics library called AGAINST, thus attacking some fundamental design limitations that prevent many improvements, such as the native support of CMYK.
