The two sculptures by Livio Scarpella made of marble, quartz and amethyst

Silvio Scarpella

Today we pay attention to two sculptures made by Livio Scarpella called 'The blessed' and 'The dammed', two examples of works made in marble, quartz and amethyst. When one observes these two sculptures in detail, two faces appear, but if we take into account that it is not a face itself and there is no organic texture rather, the artist makes us believe that there really is a human head represented there, without any doubt it is an incredible work.

The surface of the figure of the faces is organic and they are two pieces with incredible genius where the artist shows all his gifts and skills. We can find a similar work with the veiled Christ as you will see below.

This veiled Christ was made by Giuseppe Sanmartino in 1753, and possibly one of the inspirations for Livio Scarpella to get down to business with these two highly manufactured statues and high-rise artistic work.

The detail in what is the veil of the two statues It might seem that it is made of another material but it is not, since it is carved in the same marble which gives it even higher quality in the work carried out. The veil itself is an illusion created by the artist to shape the entire face.

In the same Prado Museum in Madrid we can find another statue wearing this veil with 'Isabel II veiled', which you can find in one of the rooms of this famous museum of international fame.
