New logo generators: advantages and disadvantages

Today's designers find themselves facing a paradigm of rapid change and dynamism. In order to develop our work in the most competitive way possible, it is essential to be aware of technology trends. Thus, new tools such as logo generators.

In this sense, in the last couple of years we have seen applications and web pages for the creation of low complexity logos begin to gain market. Such sites allow non-design specialists to acquire randomly made logos from through computer systems. These can sometimes be obtained later in SVG and TIFF versions without making any payment. Some eExamples of these tools are: logojoy, MarkMakerTailor brands, Canva y BrandMark.

How the logo generators work

The sites are based on the use of algorithms that integrate traditional logo design processes, where iconography and typography are normally integrated.

Depending on the page that is used, the process can vary in the following stages:

First the user enters the name of their company, organization or company. Then define which is the sector to which your business belongs and your slogan.

Then select colors and fonts appropriate to the style you are looking for. Then he selects icons that he thinks would identify the brand. Later the program collates the entered data generating multiple options brands related to the selected styles.

Finally, the client can give “like” to options that he likes so that the program continues generating new options infinitely until it finds an appropriate one.

Disadvantages for designers:

Without a doubt, it is alarming for a designer to feel that a creative industry, such as graphic design, could be attacked by new technologies based on artificial intelligence. The problem with these new tools is in their easy access and use. In this way, it makes them perfect for potential clients of real designers, which leads to an even bigger problem. Consequently, we are not only losing job opportunities, but the prices of the logo design market are decreasing due to the laws of supply and demand.

Advantages for designers:

We can try to see the possibilities that this tool offers us, looking at the situation with a little creativity and transgression.

We can try to see the possibilities that this tool offers us, looking at the situation with a little creativity and transgression.

Unquestionably the logo generators they are very efficient to generate several proposals fast. They allow us to obtain options in different colors, with different position of elements and fonts with just one click. However, the conceptualization and semantic quality of the logos produced is almost nil. In this way the problem can be exploited by designers. For example, in the case of require submitting multiple sketches fast and clarify what the client wants. Or also simply as a form of inspiration or quick preview of the design you have in mind. Later you only have to perfect and customize a single final design, working in this way in a more efficient way.

These generators generate logos that are disgusting, not in the sense that they give you an icon or style that has nothing to do with your company, but that most logos are ugly to the point of tears.

Hello! Thank you very much for your comment. Precisely what the article raises is what you mention. These generators produce very low-level logos and the worst part is that users actually use them as the final product. For this reason, it is suggested that it could be possible, regardless of their quality, to exploit these disadvantages in our favor.

I am a designer and I am also related to the geek world and new technologies: Artificial intelligence, machine learning, etc ...
Obviously those give some very low level logos, but we must bear in mind that technology grows by leaps and bounds, the creators of this do not think they are in crossed hands if not seeing how these services can be improved.
So the career for a junior logo designer could be substantially affected, unless you manage to work your way to the extreme of being a recognized designer.
I am not against new technologies and what one as a designer is to see in what way we can use them or to see which way to open with these technologies.

    A greeting!
