The Photoshop program is one of the most used by the professions, but also by many who are encouraged in creative design. On the Internet you can find tons of Photoshop effects with which to get a twist to your image and that the result is incredible.

And why use them? Imagine that you have to do the cover of your book. This you need to make an impact and for this you have taken a photo that is perfect. But placed like that, without further ado, it says nothing. Instead, by applying Photoshop effects, you can make it look like another, even made by a real expert. Now, how many are there? And how are they made?

If you put Photoshop effects in the search engine, without a doubt you will get millions of results. But one thing that is clear is that you will get many tutorials to be able to do with your photos true tricks. And, depending on the image you want, you can choose one effect or another.

If you wonder if the effects are included in the program, as can happen with the effects of Instagram or others similar, the answer is no. You have to do them manually, which is why many end up learning only a few of the many that can be carried out.

However, on the Internet you can find a large number of them, and that is what we are going to leave you today. Here you can find some of the most used Photoshop effects, or those that, by their nature, can be used for your clients.

Bokeh effect

Un "Bokeh" are photos with out-of-focus lights, but they give a magic touch to the image. To do so, you have to do the following:

  • Add a background layer (Layer / New background layer). You have to put it with a dark bokeh. Here you have to go to File / place embedded element.
  • Change that layer's blending mode to multiply or screen and lower its opacity a bit.

Surely right now you are wondering why change a color photo to black and white. And the truth is that it has a very simple answer: to accentuate the image. Believe it or not, we are so used to colors, to seeing everything in different shades, that a black and white photo catches our attention because "it is not normal."

So this time this Photoshop effect is one of the simplest you can carry out, and in fact we recommend it, for example, for covers, posters or for projects in which you are asked to highlight an object or person in the image.

And how is it done? Take note:

  • Once you have opened Photoshop and your image in the program, the first step you should do is duplicate the background layer. You do this very easily because you put the course on the Background layer, right click it and hit "duplicate layer". Another option, faster, is to give Ctrl + J (but you must have the Background layer selected.
  • Next, you need that duplicate layer to become a "smart object". How do you do that? Well, in that same layer, having it selected, you have to right click and "Convert to Smart Object".
  • Now, go to Image / Adjustments / Black and White. In the box that appears, do not change anything, just click OK.
  • The last thing, you have to change the blending mode to multiply and, having the front control as black and the background control as white, go to Layer / New adjustment layer / Gradient map. Once done, the photo will be in perfect black and white.

Photoshop Effects: Orton

The Orton effect it will make your images look powerful, magical even. You will achieve a harmony with the tones and colors that will make it seem from another world. Therefore, it is ideal if you have to work with photographs of landscapes, animals ... in general, any image where you want to highlight the beauty of the whole.

And how is it done?

  • Once you have Photoshop and your image open, give the menu Layer / Duplicate layer.
  • The blending mode for that layer must be "raster". Then duplicate that layer again.
  • In this second, you have to go to Filter / Blur / Gaussian Blur. There, set a radius of about 15 pixels. Give it to accept and you will notice the change. Now change the blending mode to multiply and you will have the effect done.

Instagram Gingham Effect

Do you remember the Gingham effect you have on Instagram? Well, you know that you can easily reproduce it in Photoshop. You just have to follow these steps:

  • Go to Layer / New Adjustment Layer / Exposure. Here you need both the gamma correction and the offset to be high, as this will give you black tones. Press OK.
  • Go to Layer / New Adjustment Layer / Levels. In this one you will have to recover the contrast that you have lost in the previous one. How? Shift the box to the right. Press OK.
  • Again, Layer / New Layer of Adjustments / Hue / Saturation. You need to lower the saturation level a bit.
  • Layer / New Layer. This should be painted deep dark blue. Now, you have to lower the opacity. Finally, change the blending mode to "soft light". And voila!

Watercolor effect

If you would like to converting an image to watercolor, you can also do it with Photoshop styles. To do this, follow these steps:

First, you need to create a blank "canvas". To do this, we recommend that you go to File / New. The measurements try to match those of your image.

  • Go to Filter / Filter Gallery.
  • Select Texture, and then Texturize.
  • Apply the following parameters:
    • Scale: 130.
    • Texture: Canvas.
    • Light: lower right.
    • Relief: 4.
    • Click OK.
  • Now you have to put yourself with your image. To do this, you have to drag the image to the canvas that you have made.
  • Filter / Filter gallery. Choose the Artistic part and click on Diluted Color.
  • You have to apply these parameters: Texture, 1; shadow intensity, 0; brush detail, 14. Press OK
  • Image / Adjustments / Hue / Saturation. Here you have to put in the window a saturation of -75. Hit OK.
  • Image / Adjustments / Brightness / Contrast. Raise the brightness to 72. Press OK.
  • Now, selecting the image layer, click in the lower right corner and put it in Mask.
  • Select the brush and make it black. Little by little you will create your mask. Therefore, you are not only going to place it in black, but in different colors.
  • Once you're done, you just have to combine the layers.
