Recycling and the Pipeline chair by Christophe Machet

Pipeline chairs

Christophe machet, designer and engineer managed to produce a collection of very iconic and practical recycled contemporary chairs.

The Paris-based designer, presented the collection called Pipeline during Milan Design Week. On display at the Alcova gallery, it was seen surrounded by sloppy industrial aesthetics, unpainted walls and damp floors.

The concept

The objective of the project was to show how certain discarded materials can be reused to develop totally different industrial concepts.

In this sense, Machet's design can be cut into one piece from a disused standard size drain pipe. This recyclable item works very well for chair design due to the capabilities of PVC.

Being a low-cost, long-lasting material with a natural curvature ideally you can get a very affordable and attractive chair back. For this reason they are very cheap and can last for decades.

The creation

To make your project come true, Machet had to design his own cutting machine. To do this, he created a custom machine to contain the three-meter-long pipe, which in turn, had to rotate to allow the cut. The development of this new machine makes it possible to build the chairs to order. In this way, once the seats are cut, they are painted with color sprays yellow, red or white. Finally, the legs made of plywood naturally.

Unlike any other plastic furniture, the great thing about the Pipeline chair is that it is not molded; Rather, it is cut from a previously molded material. This feature allows your production to occupy a minimum of work and have a reduced production cost.

However, what sets it apart from any other product is its ecologically conscious production process.

Christophe Machet graduated from "London's Royal College of Art" in 2012, having previously studied at ECAL, therefore, his work normally shows relationship with engineering and design concepts.
