Pretty fonts

pretty fonts

When you have to do the cover of a book, the poster of a presentation, or the advertising of a company, one of the most important tools for a creative and designer is, without a doubt, typography. Really, you need beautiful fonts that match the essence of what you are creating. For example, imagine that you have to do a presentation for Halloween; you will need fonts with "darker" letters, "vampiric", and so on. But they won't be the same ones you use for Valentine's Day, right?

Pretty fonts are subjective. And it is that what may seem beautiful to you, to another person may not be. For this reason, when presenting projects, it is better to have several types of letters to present it and that the end customer chooses the one they like the most; than putting what you like first. But what is considered beautiful typeface?

What are fonts?

pretty fonts

Fonts can be conceptualized as a way of designing the letters that you are going to use. In other words, is the way the letters are drawn (numbers, symbols ...) to achieve a striking visual effect, and very different between them. Of course, it is somewhat different from Lettering or Calligraphy, although the three techniques are similar, especially for the creation of letters and other alphanumeric characters.

To give you an idea, fonts refer more to print or digital media, being able to obtain four types:

  • Serif They are those types of letters that have serifs (hence their name), with serifs, ornaments at the ends, etc. Some of the best known are Times New Roman, Garamond ... They are classified as serious and traditional fonts, being used for large texts as they facilitate their reading.
  • Sans Serif. In this case, they do not have any flourishes or finials that can make them pretty fonts. And it is that they are focused on the commercial, to offer an elegant, safe, minimalist and modern impression of what you want to show. In fact, it is used in posters, advertising, etc. Examples of this? Helvetica, Gotham, Futura ...
  • Slab Serif. Another of the names they receive is "Egyptian." In this case, there are serifs and ends, but unlike Serifs, they are thicker and seek to stand out in headlines or in advertising. For example, with Clarendon.
  • script. Here we could say that it is where you will find the beautiful fonts, since they are cursive fonts, based mainly on a handmade typeface, which tries to evoke calligraphy. That is why they can be found in many different types.

And the pretty fonts?

If we add the adjective "pretty" to fonts, most people think that they are a typeface that is aesthetically beautiful. But that they almost always associate it with romanticism and, hence, with the feminine. But it doesn't really have to be that way.

Really a beautiful typeface is one that, for your taste, is. But in the case of a project, you have to guide yourself because that type of font is the right one for the work you carry out, be it a book, a poster, an advertisement, etc.

Beautiful fonts that we recommend

As you can have many types of projects running and need different fonts, we have made a selection of what we consider beautiful fonts, for different uses. Surely some of them (or several) convince you to use them.

Merriweather

Merriweather

This typeface is focused on large texts, for example in books, newspapers, blogs, etc. The aim is that the reading is pleasant and that it does not tire the eye (or you have to guess what it says). In principle, it is a serif font, but it has a sans version, so you can use both (one for the headline and one for the texts).

Playfair Display

Focused on everything for headlines, or titles that you want to be well defined, you have this type of letter, very attractive in itself because of the curves it makes (which, as you will see, are subtle but at the same time attract attention). In itself, this font already imposes, so the rest of the text should have a rather low profile.

miama

miama

Among the pretty fonts, this is one of the best. It is a kind of letters that simulate calligraphy and italics, with an elegant element. It is not good to use it for large texts, but for very short words or phrases.

In addition, the source itself is very detailed, so you do not have to overload the complete set.

Alex Brush

Alex Brush

A typology somewhat easier to understand but also with many details in the words, is Alex Brush. It is an ideal typeface for small phrases or single words that need to be highlighted. As for the headlines, capital letters will not look too good, while lowercase is easily understood.

Bitter

Bitter

This is one of the pretty fonts for newspapers or for long texts. And it is very simple to understand and is not tiring to look at. Of course, because it is so simple, it can end up going unnoticed, so it is better to combine it with another font that makes the area where the text stands out.

Pretty fonts: Mooglank

Do you want to give the text a more "childish" vision? Do you remember when you started to write and all the letters had to be joined? Well that's what you find in this typeface, from vintage style and that will make you think of children.
