History of the Tesla logo

History of the Tesla logo

Each company, personal brand, business... has a logo that defines it. This should combine the essence of what you do and what you want others to understand about your brand. But do you know the history of the Tesla logo?

Before you ask, we're going to have to go back several years, because although it is now known as a brand of electric cars, in the United States they were already working in 1900. What happened to make them stop being successful? What does it have to do with Tesla?

Tesla's story

Tesla's story

As you well know, Tesla is Elon Musk's car brand and was created in 2003 by Martin Eberhard and Mark Tarpenning. However, its current owner is Musk.

Testa was named after the physicist and inventor Nikola Tesla.

And it is that, in case you do not know, the Tesla logo is like this because it is a part of a piece that Tesla himself invented, a cross section of the electric motor, which he created more than 125 years ago.

In fact, in 1901 electric cars already existed in the United States, and they were used. The figures tell us that 38% of cars in the US were electric. So what happened?

Well, gasoline vehicles arrived that were much cheaper (almost three times less than an electric one) which caused the sales of the latter to drop drastically and, with this, caused them to stop producing in 1930.

It wasn't until 1990 that an electrical engineer and a computer developer met and started producing, first, e-book readers, which was a huge success. But later, they came to electric cars, founding Tesla Motors in 2003.

And how does Elon Musk enter the company? Through an investment. And it is that Musk invested money in his company, making it start to sound and put electric vehicles back on the market. This is how it was when the first Tesla car appeared, in that same year, whose logo was a T. But it was not known at first what it represented, and they simply saw it as the letter of Tesla without knowing the hidden meaning it has.

What does the T in the Tesla logo mean?

What does the T in the Tesla logo mean?

As we have told you before, the T in the Tesla logo is actually a part of the cross section of the electric motor that Nikola Tesla invented.

In reality, the piece is round, with many axles, as if it were a wheel, and what they did was take a part of it that simulated the brand's own T.

In fact, it is said that the creators themselves used Nikola Tesla's own plans for his electric motor to draw a section that resembled a T and decided to work with it until they achieved what we can now see in the logo.

Who created the Tesla logo

After knowing the history of the Tesla logo, we must talk about the creators of this design. And they are the design studio RO Studio. They came up with the idea of joining the brand itself, Tesla, as well as one of the inventions most related to electric vehicles, in the logo.

The evolution of the Tesla logo

The evolution of the Tesla logo

In the beginning, the first version of the Tesla logo had a shield behind the T. The letters were black while the shield was silver to stand out. However, the logo as such did not last long and years later they decided to dispense with the shield, leaving all the prominence to T herself.

In some cases, the logo not only has the T, but just below (sometimes above) the word Tesla is placed, in capital letters and differentiating the E and the A (the E is three horizontal bars without joining and the A has the upper part independent of the lower part.

Now, the logo can be adapted in different colors, mainly in three: red, black and silver.

What does the logo tell us

When the Tesla logo is seen, qualifiers such as luxury, power and elegance are present when defining it. And it is that for many it is a brand of high standing, that is, expensive, and not possible for anyone. We could say that it is a sybaritic brand and that only a few can afford the price of the cars.

But there is no doubt that it also imposes quality and trust. Although they are expensive, the cars are reliable and have even opened up the future of electric locomotion.

Hence, the logo distills the fact that someone who has a Tesla car is a person of high position (who can afford the car and everything that goes with it).

Now that you know what the history of the Tesla logo is, surely when you see it the first thing that will come to your mind will be to see what the complete piece from which they took their own logo looks like.
