The design of the centenary of the Madrid Metro is now official

Centennial Metro Madrid

As they have announced on their Twitter account @Metro_madrid, the decision of the contest is official. According to what they say, more than 1.500 proposals have been submitted to the competition. Among them, a jury made up of members of Metro Madrid, the Community of Madrid and a group of Marketing experts have made the decision.

This winning design conveys two key elements for the company which are the word "Metro" in the current logo to maintain its original image, and the number 100 integrated into the rhomboid geometry, with the secondary message of the centenary date, they comment.

The winner has also managed to make her logo the chosen one to identify everything that the suburban celebrates related to the centenary, she has also obtained an annual transport pass and 5.000 euros. There have also been four other finalists awarded with an annual transport pass.

Are you right with the design?

This is a question that will always arise when faced with this type of contest.. First of all for the world of design. Since it is said that this type of contests disparages the profession of designers. Since anyone can opt for this type of awards. Anyone from home, with a computer can do it. And that, for agencies dedicated to design affects them, to the extent that their work is forced to be done for free. Waiting for a contest.

The result? It may not be the optimal or the most professional. As in this case, it is said to be misguided by the movement. Since the centennial message is not very well reflected. At least this is what Branding experts believe, who agree that it is another, of those presented, that should have won.

METRO MADRID: The winner, Azucena Herránz, a 40-year-old architect from Madrid, has obtained the award thanks to a modern and innovative design. It maintains the essence of the current logo so that it does not lose its identity and also manages to evoke other times

Other projects that should have had more prominence

I put a gallery of projects that, at least, should have had a little more prominence. This work has been carried out with the same effort as the previous one, therefore, these contests do not combine with everyone's work. At least, there should be a space for those who fattened the number to 1.500 proposals. Because the design will be unusable, thanks for the work done was required.

Personal opinion

The adaptation of the logo, the extension to different uses and the reason for your choice. Those are all the defects that appear at first glance in the chosen image. Others, like the one presented by Juan Miguel, has a more extensive and open use. For many platforms, that might as well stick around longer than the centennial year. Maybe that is why he is not chosen? Who knows if in the future they won't knock on your door to choose that image.

Regarding the graphic language, the graphic design used is inspired by two important aspects related to Metro de Madrid: its history and its modernity. These simple premises have made this proposal the winner, which is intended to be a tribute to these 100 years of history and service now celebrated by the first suburban in Spain.

In short, a 'torn' logo for the display of a '100' seems little to me. It is, to say the least, illegible. And more if we talk about a public institution. Who wants to bring all kinds of people together. I cannot imagine at first glance that doubts can generate this image so little functional.

On the part of Metro Madrid, it does not seem right to show only the winning image. The finalists have not even come to light. This fact seems little short of reserved. For the criticism that could fall for the election.

To finish I leave a poll in case you think the evaluation criteria are understood in the selected logo.

  • CRITERION 1: Originality? Creativity?
  • CRITERION 2: Applicability to Social Networks?
  • CRITERION 3: Ease of interpretation?
