What should the perfect workspace look like for a designer?

When I chose to study graphic design, I was very excited. For a long time I had been attracted to the idea of the way of working in addition to the rest of the incredible things that it has. Then they recommended that when choosing what to study one should imagine their ideal workspace. One should try to see oneself in that place physically.

I imagined what it would be like to spend hours playing on my computer and listening to music, in a relaxed environment where I could read, draw or paint and I loved the idea. However, I didn't think about how much a job of such characteristics would cost, both physically and financially. Although I would choose this profession one and a thousand times more, I would like to tell the new designers who start their way, with what problems will be found.

In this article I mention some of the indispensable elements for a designer's workspace and that you can find in online stores like living. First of all, there are two essential elements that cannot be missing and in which I advise not to skimp on expenses. Then I mention others that I think facilitate and make the designer's work more enjoyable.

A good chair

The chair is one of the most important work items for a designer. Especially for those designers who spend 8 days sitting or sometimes even more hours.

It is very important when choosing an office chair or armchair to take into account several aspects. First, take into account the ergonomics. For this reason, it should be noted that they have lumbar support areas, head support and that they are firm but comfortable.

Second, it is essential that you have a functional and adaptable design. This means that it allows to adapt the height, either in relation to the person or in relation to the desk.

Finally, select the chair according to efficient materials and colors. It is necessary to remember that it will be used almost every day of the week and for a large number of hours. Therefore, it would be smart to choose materials that do not spoil with use and are easy to clean, such as leather. In addition to this, I always recommend choosing dark-colored furniture, since light colors deteriorate much faster.

A clear example of a chair that meets all the above qualities could be this model of the brand Beliani although there are many more that meet the same pattern.

I leave you a graphic so you can see the most important points when choosing a good chair to work with or spend many hours in front of the computer:

Choose office chair

A computer that flies

It is known that graphic designers are generally fans of Apple products. But don't you think they are beautiful and perfectly designed? Our predilection for these exorbitantly priced gadgets is due to the fact that their products have a very "User friendly". Consequently this operating system greatly simplifies the designer's work. Task that generally has a very heavy workload.

In this sense, the designer faces multiple heavyweight programs that require the computer to be able to maneuver between the simultaneous use of one and the other without great effort. This is how it allows us to continuously stop and resume work without even turning off the computer. This capacity is undoubtedly one of the best since it allows us streamline work flow. On the other hand, it also has the ability to recover the work done before an unexpected shutdown.

Of course, there are multiple disadvantages that vary from the price, through the little flexibility that they offer the user, to in some cases the impossibility of updating the hardware. In addition we must also add the mouse and keyboard if we have chosen a desktop computer. However, it is still the majority of designers who admit that the pros outweigh the negatives. So, it is worth asking yourself ... What is the most efficient for me at this stage of my career? Is the expense justified in view of the work flow I have?

Desktop

The desk is an element that can be chosen with greater flexibility. In this sense, your choice should be determined according to the relationship between material and color. These elements will determine the reflectance index that the desktop can have. Reflectance is the ability of a body to reflect light that reaches the environment. Consequently, this phenomenon influences the user's visual perception and their ability to work, since they perceive these waves that can become annoying. In relation to this, the ideal would be to choose a work table with matte materials that reduce the brightness of objects and reduce reflectance.

Graphic tablet

Designers who have a lot of workflow and value expression of the handwork they know how important it is to have a tablet. Nowadays the use of vectorization computer software has become indispensable. The problem is that these are generally used with commands that allow little gesture, as are mice.

The solution to this is that graphic tablets appeared. These are tools that allow you to simplify the use of vector programs by producing jobs that preserve the expression of hand strokes. On the other hand, they also collaborate with a more efficient and faster development of projects.

Speakers

UE boom speakers

I personally think that music is one of the most important elements in terms of development of creativity. Without a doubt, it is essential for any creative to be exposed to an environment where their senses can be stimulated. Especially if it is a job that can become very static such as graphic design. For this reason, I recommend considering purchase wireless and portable speakers. These are very practical gadgets that allow great flexibility of use and generally their sound quality is optimal. In this way we will be able to set the space and make it a more pleasant place.

Library with many books

Generally, people who do not know well about design assume that all we do is "drawings" and that we do not study anything. Although the theoretical content of design careers cannot be compared at all with those of an Engineering career; it is extremely important for the designer to have extensive knowledge in various fields. This happens because generally, it works in / and for multiple areas of which it has to have knowledge.

For this reason, you must be able to constantly acquire information and to return to it at the right time. In addition, it would not hurt to project our clients a bit of intellectuality and foundation in what we say.

It is more of a note on products than recommendations for a «perfect or ideal workspace». I thought they would talk about having space on the desk, not filling up with objects around you, drinking, water, putting some plants, having the desk free from the PC of useless files, etc ... what do I know ... well.
