The businesses we have in our neighborhood, that little shop through which several generations have passed, are about to disappear. And that is why this South Korean artist wants to capture them in his paintings so that they are not lost in memory and time.
Me Kyeoung Lee has chosen this theme in a wise way knowing that more and more are disappearing those little stores where we can buy anything. And it is that he has been painting for more than 20 years a great variety of stores that we collect today along these lines.
It was an afternoon by chance that made him return to one of those little corner shops in which he was captivated by the magic impregnated in each of its corners.
Hence the inspiration to paint these small shops that are closing more and more and that many of his paintings passed to "better life". One in particular is fondly remembered, since he knew its owner, an 80 year old woman.
He finally decided to close it after more than 50 years. So I take it to one of his canvases and so with a good number of them who have participated in protecting those small corner stores.
Lee's technique underlies painting each piece with multiple layers with ultra fine lines in the drawing. He is capable of combining up to 28 different acrylic shades in some of his works.
The objective is that the colors have that solid shape without appearing that they are too "thick", just like that magic that sticks out one of those stores where time is noticeable in every corner.
And it is that Lee is able to bring us into our sight each of those magical details when we start to pay attention to his paintings. Those boxes of vegetables or even the bicycles parked right outside.
