Capture spontaneous moments

Try not to draw attention to your camera so you can take people's photos without them knowing. This will allow you to get great portraits, full of sincerity, of people showing their true emotions.

You can try to approach passersby and politely ask them to pose for you. Avoid disturbing people who seem to be in a hurry and ask people, ask if they would like you to send them a copy of the photo as thanks.

Grab a tripod and apply a slow shutter speed to create a bit of motion blur and show a sense of urgency in your shots of busy street scenes.

Go black and white

All the  photos Street lights often look great in black and white as it gives them an urban feel and helps make the backgrounds occupied by all sorts of items less obtrusive. You can shoot in black and white if your camera allows it, or transform your photos using some editing software.

Choose a place

Choose a very crowded place with lots of passersby, for example city centers are full of activity. Keep an eye out for interesting moments and characters, being prepared to shoot quickly.

Use Shutter Priority mode

Avoid using a tripod as you will have to stand in the crowd and draw attention to yourself - switching to shutter priority mode and using a fast shutter speed is a good way to get photos sharp handheld.

Turn off the flash

Turn off the flash as it might scare off potential targets, which isn't very good for candid photos, and chances are, it's not going to be powerful enough to hit your target if they're too far away anyway. If you're shooting in low light, try increasing the ISO instead.

Use autofocus

When filming on a busy street, you will miss a great opportunity if you try to use manual focus. Use autofocus to save time so you can consider composing a great shot.

Shoot from the hip

People often get uptight if they see that you are taking photos of them. Hold the camera at the height of your hips to compose discreetly. It helps if you have a tilting LCD screen so you can see what you're doing. Then use the zoom to capture a close-up, while you can maintain the position from a distance.
