Typography (part III: Parts of characters, differentiation between fonts)

In a letterThere are elements that should not be missing so that it can be recognized. If these elements are missing, it will go from being a letter to a simple graphic that does not correspond to any phonetic sound.

If we want to have a basic notions of typography we must know and take into account the different parts that make up a typographic character, and which of them are fundamental and which can be dispensable due to their ornamental character.

For example, to create a typography ornamental or fantasy we must play mainly with the accessory elements of a source how can the Goal attempts or the queues.

  • Arm- Diagonal or horizontal portion that comes out of a vertical trace
  • Crossbar o cross: Main line that crosses the main stroke
  • Loop o panza: curved line
  • Fillet: horizontal line between diagonals, verticals or curves
  • Auction o terminal: small final stroke that does not follow the direction of the main stroke
  • Tear: end of a stroke with a rounded shape
  • Spur: end of a stroke that does not end in a tear or auction
  • Tail: lower extension
  • Upper and lower buttonhole: line that forms the curvature in the letter G / g
  • Neck: line connecting the two eyelets of the g
  • Ear: ending of some letters such as r or the g
