Yesterday, Monday, we ended the day with good news, very good, the truth, the city of Valencia, my city, has been chosen as World Design Capital 2022. Quite a dream!
It all started three years ago and since then we have not stopped dreaming. Last June a jury made up of architects, designers, artists and businessmen from many countries visited our city to get to know it and be able to choose between us or the Indian city of Bengalore, also called the Garden City. And we have been the chosen ones!
The València World Capital of Design 2022 candidacy is a project of the Associació València Capital del Disseny and has the impulse of the Valencia City Council, the Presidency of the Generalitat Valenciana, Valencia Tourism, Valencia Fair and La Marina de València.
Bertrand Demore, general secretary of the WDO, in communication by videoconference with the València Capital del Disseny Association, has communicated the decision of the committee in which it has been assessed "Precision, rigor and professionalism" of València's candidacy throughout the process, as well as "Cohesion and strength" of the sector.
Iban Ramón was in charge of making the image. The program, titled “The Mediterranean design of Valencia. Design for change, design for the senses " will begin to emerge in the face of the great event.
The strategic director said that the budget calculated for this event is around 10 million euros. According to this information, public financing, as planned, "will cover 40%, the rest will be in charge of sponsorships and private companies," he said.
Valencia thus becomes the first Spanish city to be designated as the World Design Capital 2022, after the failed attempt in Bilbao 2014. Thus, it will take over from Lille 2020 in a recognition that cities such as Helsinki, Seoul, Tapei and Mexico have held, among other cities.
