Vardehaugen draws full-scale plans of future houses

Thanks to the AutoCAD, Revit or Rhino design programs we are able to devise in a better way what the real shape will be like of our house. 3D programs that almost allow us to immerse ourselves in the nooks and crannies where we will place all the furniture and other objects that populate a home today.

But there is a Norwegian firm, Vardehaugen, who are using their own office parking lot to translate into the asphalt what will be the plan of a house or floor through masking tape and chalk. The best way for a client to visit the spaces that they will have when they first inhabit that flat or apartment that will become their home.

This technique allows the firm and its clients to view directly plans on a one-to-one scale instead of having to interpret it through a screen on a smaller scale. One of his partners learned to draw full-scale at the Bergen School of Architecture. He described it as a more abstract way to understand a plane.

After becoming a qualified architect, Aasarod said that he found the notion of drawing to scale to be quite useful, not simply in terms of understanding the plan, but also in a new way of communicating with customers. The ability to visualize a floor is an important part of the profession of architect. Both serve to evaluate and communicate the concepts and solutions to the end customer.

Draw those plans in the parking lot of his studio allows them to perfectly understand the size and proportions of their projects, allowing them to better fine-tune them and have a more realistic feel of the existing dimensions and spaces.
