Video tutorial: Torn paper effect in Adobe Photoshop + After Effects

http://youtu.be/C_K6o_p_6BM

In this video tutorial I will show you how to create an animation in Adobe After Effects totally from scratch and helping us Adobe Photoshop. This is a small guide to create this effect on video and with an acceptable quality, although in a later video tutorial I will show you how to take advantage of this effect to create a professional animation with 3D camera movements.

At the moment we will start by creating the elements on which we are going to work in Adobe Photoshop and then import the .psd file into After Effects and manipulate it until we create a realistic animation. As always, I leave you a guide with the most important steps that will support the video:

  1.  We will create a new document with dimensions of 1000px X 1000px.
  2. Double click on the front color and we select the white color to give it a 45 percent brightness with the aim of finding a grayish hue. Once we have chosen the appropriate tone, we will tint the layer with the paint pot.
  3. We add a new transparent layer and click Ctrl + Delete key to tint this second layer with the back color.
  4. We add the noise effect in Filter> Noise> Add Noise Gaussian type, monochrome and at 10%.
  5. We add a Gaussian blur, in Filter> Blur> Gaussian Blur and we give it an amount of 3 pixels.
  6. We press Ctrl + B to modify the color levels: 0, 0 and 53 in halftones and activating the lightness box.
  7. Using the lasso tool we will trace the break of the paperl in a totally irregular and realistic way. Once we have made the selection we will create a layer mask.
  8. We'll go to Filter Menu> Filter Gallery> Splashes to apply a radius of 15 and a smoothing of 10.
  9. We will duplicate this layer with Ctrl + J.
  10. To the new layer we will mock the adjustment of levels, pressing Ctrl + L. En Input levels we will apply the following values: 0-0,61-255 and in Output levels: 244.
  11. We will press Ctrl + T and we will modify the size of this layer in order to expose the strip of white color that borders the cutout.
  12. We will apply the filter of gaussian blur this time with 1 pixel of quantity.
  13. To the lower layer we will apply the effect of drop shadow modifying the following settings: Blending mode in multiply and with a pure black hue with an opacity of 30%. A distance of 9 pixels and a size of 8 pixels.
  14. The second part will be in Adobe After Effects. We must import our Photoshop file into .psd format to the application. Once we choose this file, a dialog box will appear that will give us to choose between choosing the layers individually or importing them into a joint file. We will have to select the layers independently.
  15. Once all the layers have been imported, we will have to place the lower piece of paper first, then the layer with the upper piece of paper, then the white layer mask layer and finally the layer with the grayer layer mask.
  16. We will apply the effect CC Page Turn in the first layer of all of them, that is, in the lower piece of paper and apply the values that best suit us.
  17. Using the timer we will create keyframes to reveal that movement and that break in the form of animation.

Easy or not? Do you have any doubt?
