Big wins can come in small packages, and no matter where we look, we will always find new evidence that people are embracing the compassion for animals like never before.
After 116 years of captivity, Barnum Animal Cookies they have been released from their cages.
These cookies have been sold in boxes that have a design that shows animals caged in a circus car. For this reason, the organization People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), suggested that Mondelez International, Nabisco's parent company, remove the cages from the design. The brand considered redesigning the packaging, will now show free animals in the wild rather than being held captive in cages for human entertainment.
Barnum's Animals new packaging perfectly reflects that our society no longer tolerates caging and chaining exotic animals for circus shows. They show a zebra, an elephant, a lion, a giraffe and a gorilla walking side by side in a natural habitat, and in the background, an extensive savanna with trees in the distance. PETA celebrates this redesign in conjunction with the closure of the circuses Ringling Bros. y Barnum & Bailey Circus, and the end of the use of wild animals in many other circuses.
Compassion as a trend in values
It is inhumane that these living and sentient beings continue to be uprooted from their families and subjected to beatings, isolation and neglect. Abused animals in circuses will cease to be treated as emotionless inanimate toys, as long as people don't pay for admission to these performances.
The world is changing, and values are being rethought. It is gratifying that design is a vital part in communicating positive changes in society. Most people do not accept violence towards animals for entertainment. And we as creatives, designers, illustrators and advertisers have a great work ahead with this cause.
