Test for designers: put your skills to the test

KernType, test for designers

Be a good designer or not is a difficult question to answer. The evaluation, totally subjective, would have to be offered to us by someone who, knowing the union well, would evaluate our communication skills, among others.

As long as there is no such design judge, the only thing we can put to the test are our more technical skills: trying to perform advanced exercises of the design programs, proposing new solutions for existing material (redesign of prestigious brands ...). But not only that: we can also test our more sensory abilities, such as our perception of color and our "good eye" for kerning. All with test for designers that we bring you today.

KernType and Color, the tests for designers

Arisen within an online course aimed at programmers, the two tests that we come to show you today are gaining strength and fame among designers. Perhaps it is more common to find one online tool to test our vision of color; but what is unusual is to run into a kind of game that allows us to know how well educated our eye is with respect to kerning.

KernType, test for designers

Still don't know what kerning is? This term is used to refer to the space between pairs of letters. In another post we talk more deeply about him, in case you prefer to keep an eye on it before continuing. Thanks to Kerntype., we can evaluate our ability in a very simple way. Click on the letter that we want to move and click on the left or right arrows on our keyboard to adjust. We will go through a series of words, in which the application itself will show us the correct solution and our score. In the end, we will get a figure out of 100. Passing would be 50, 90 would be a very good score and 100… Perfection!

Color

A little more stressful is the Color, since they are trials against the clock. We will have to manage to match the color (or the colors) that the application will show us, moving our time around the chromatic circle. The test starts to get complicated when we have to search for 3 colors at the same time ...

What do you think of these tests? What was your score?
